Yesterday, Ms. Ellis, a literacy strategist, taught us close reading strategies. The close reading strategies we learned will help us to gain a deeper understanding of the text we are reading. We read an article about the provincial government.



Definition Clues:
-phrases or words that define or explain
-words that signal definition clues are: is defined as, means, consist of, refer to, be called, may be, seen as
-e.g., the word reading is defined as the act of recognizing words and comprehending text
-we highlighted definition clues in blue



Example Clues:
-there is an example of the word nearby
-words that signal example clues are: like, such as, for example
-e.g., For example, the hatchet is an adventurous book about survival. 
-we highlighted example clues in yellow 



Synonyms Clues:
-a word that has the same meaning is in the sentence
-words that signal synonym clues are: or, also, as, like, same
-e.g., fiction or poetry can be used to practice reading

-we highlighted synonym clues in green
