Today we did a close reading of the holiday song, "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch" We read the lyrics two times. The first time we wanted to find out what the lyricists wanted us to understand and what we wondered about the song. The second time we read the lyrics, we looked for key phrases and words that are important to the meaning of the song. We found out that the lyricists were comparing Mr. Grinch to things that are either painful, unfavorable and unlikeable. For example, You're as cuddly as a cactus symbolizes that no one wants to be near him because he is hurtful.
